Jane's mother bled to death of an illegal abortion when she was only 12 years old in 1932, when abortion laws were even stricter than they are now, leaving her and her 5 siblings motherless and homeless. The children were spread out between relatives, sent to orphanages, or thrown into the foster system. Some reunited when they were older, but lost the childhood memories of growing up together. Some never saw each other again.

Children of unwanted pregnancies face a greater chance of living below the poverty level (72 percent compared to 55 percent) or living in a household without enough money to cover food, housing, and transportation (87 percent compared to 70 percent).
